Self Driving Car - (Thoughts on a Topic NOT Presented by your group)
In 2007, Walt Disney surprised the
audience with a fiction movie called “Meet the Robinsons” by its scenes about
the future life and one of the most impressive scenes of the movie is how the
cars of the future work. Technology has been developed every day that the dream
of having a self-driving car comes really close to us nowadays. If self-driving
car become popular in the future, there will be a lot of advantages by
increasing safety and travel demand for the occupants, shifting the way people
think about ownership comes along with the disadvantages such as false sense of
security and rushing design which leads to fatal accidents. There are many
researchers agree that self-driving cars will be much safer than normal cars
because of lacks distracted and error-prone human. About more than 90% traffic
accident are caused by people and using a self-driving car can decrease the
percentage of unwanted accidents. Moreover, self-driving cars have faster
reactions than human which can become a solution on road. Autonomous programmed
to priority the occupants’ safety in case of any accidents, it processes faster
and has faster reactions to any sudden pop up situations that happen while
driving. This product will make the cars running on the street more than a
normal one which helps the disabled, elderly and young age driver increase the
mobility. Finally, about the advantages of the self-driving cars is this kind
of vehicle has lower cost and even safer for the environment than the cars we
use today. By the time driving
become cheaper and easier, the demand of traveling will increase significantly,
and it will benefit the economy a lot. However, there are still a lot of
disadvantages besides all the good points above. Tesla’s accident in March 2018
is an evidence about autonomous car still cannot be assured the occupants’
safety while driving (Tesla’s
self-driving car burst into flame and the driver died shortly afterward at the
hospital). This scandal proved that the technology can be fooled because the
cameras in the trial car apparently didn’t “see” the white trailer in front of
the car as an obstacle, possibly because the trailer was hard to distinguish
against a bright sky. However, technology is still developing, and self-driving
cars are being fixed and updated every day. Accidents happen every day whether
they are caused by autonomous or human distracted, so we can’t blame the new
cars for the faults just because of one accident they caused. Personally, I am
looking forward to the new intelligence car because of all the advantages that it can bring to the society.
